It's one of the most common questions we get at FD & Design: “Should I go with hardwood or luxury vinyl?” Honest answer? It depends on your home, your family, and how you live. Here's how I walk customers through it.
Start with Your Subfloor and Moisture Level
Hardwood and moisture are not friends. If you're flooring a basement, a laundry room, or any space that sees regular humidity or potential water exposure, luxury vinyl is the clear winner. LVP is 100% waterproof and dimensionally stable — meaning it won't warp or buckle if the humidity swings.
Above grade, in a bedroom or living room with good climate control? Hardwood becomes a very viable option.
Think About Your Lifestyle
Kids, dogs, and heavy foot traffic are hardwood's adversaries. Real wood scratches. It dents. It needs refinishing every 10-15 years. Luxury vinyl is highly resistant to all of the above and requires very little maintenance beyond regular sweeping and mopping.
That said, hardwood has one thing LVP can't fully replicate: the real thing. There's a warmth, a depth, and a prestige to genuine hardwood that adds to a home's value and character in a way that's simply different.
Consider Resale Value
Hardwood still commands a premium in real estate. If you're planning to sell within 5-10 years, hardwood in key living areas can be a selling point. But LVP has closed the gap significantly — buyers today recognize quality LVP and appreciate its practicality.
The Budget Factor
Hardwood typically costs more — both in material and installation. LVP is generally more affordable and easier to install, which can make a real difference when you're flooring a larger home.
My Recommendation
For most Rockville Centre families, I often recommend hardwood in formal living areas and main-level entertaining spaces, and luxury vinyl in kitchens, mudrooms, basements, and kids' rooms. Best of both worlds — and a smart use of your flooring budget.
